What is Sports Medicine?

stretching athlete's legSports medicine uses a multi-disciplinary approach to treat injuries associated with exercise and sports. A true sports medicine environment also has a preventative focus as various aspects of exercise physiology, sports science and sports performance are utilized.

The sports medicine clinicians at the Sport Specific Training and Rehabilitation (SST) have backgrounds in physical therapy, athletic training, exercise physiology, massage therapy and sports nutrition. Many of them have gone on to receive advanced degrees in a particular area of specialty and are certified strength and conditioning specialists (CSCS) through the National Strength and Conditioning Association. This unique blend of specialties allows our clients access to a broad spectrum of services. This maximizes their potential to reach the goals they have set, and is the main feature that sets SST apart from other outpatient physical therapy clinics.

ACL Rehabilitation Program

The ACL Rehab Program is designed to take an athlete through the first 2 phases of rehab and has the primary focus of gaining normal knee motion, improving lower extremity strength, and increasing neuromuscular control of the knee joint to facilitate stability. The overall goal of this program is to develop the patient’s strength base so that they can perform a functional progression which will facilitate their return to sport or the workplace.

Return to Sports Program

The Return to Sports Program is designed to facilitate an athlete’s return to play by "bridging the gap" between rehab and being able to participate in a high level sports program. It begins with a screening to determine any residual musculoskeletal impairment that may be present from a previous injury or surgery. The next step is to establish a functional baseline by having an athlete perform several standardized tests. This information is used to quantify deficits and help establish goals to achieve during training sessions.
